Boiler Installation Compliance: What Homeowners Should Check

What compliance means for a boiler installation

A compliant boiler installation is not proved by a new appliance sitting neatly on the wall. The work involves gas safety, the boiler’s setup and, depending on the property and scope, any relevant building requirements. These are related, but they are not all the same check or document.

That distinction matters if you are comparing quotes or checking what has been handed over. A badge on a van, an invoice or a boiler manual does not tell you everything about who carried out the gas work or what records apply to your installation.

Check who will carry out the gas work

Before work starts, check that the engineer who will carry out the gas work is registered with Gas Safe. You can use the public Gas Safe Register to look up an engineer or business. You can also ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card and check that it covers the type of gas work being done. If anything is unclear, pause and ask before the work goes ahead.

Registration is relevant to gas work, not a general sign-off for every part of a building project. If the boiler installation involves other work as well, ask which parts fall under gas safety requirements and whether any separate requirements apply. This helps you understand what the registration covers without assuming it certifies every alteration in the property.

Here in Dunbar, East Lothian and the surrounding area, we are Gas Safe Registered. If you are considering a new boiler, our Boiler Installation page gives an overview of the service.

Ask what records apply to your installation

There is not always one piece of paper that answers every question about compliance. The relevant records depend on the work carried out and the requirements that apply to the property. Before the installation, ask what documentation you should expect to receive and whether any building requirements or notifications apply. A clear answer should explain what each document relates to, rather than treating all paperwork as interchangeable.

When the work is complete, keep the documents together with the boiler’s manual and any details supplied for its controls. Check that the paperwork identifies the appliance or work clearly enough for you to understand what it records. If a document is expected but has not arrived, ask who is responsible for providing it and when you should expect it. Do not assume that a verbal assurance replaces a record that is required for the work.

What you can check without touching the boiler

You can check the engineer’s registration, keep the paperwork and note down any questions about the installation. You can also ask for an explanation of the controls and make sure you know how to use them as intended.

Leave the appliance, gas pipework, flue and internal components alone. Do not remove a cover, adjust a setting you do not understand or try to test a gas connection yourself. Those checks and adjustments belong with a suitably qualified person. If you notice an unfamiliar smell, an alarm or another immediate safety concern, follow the relevant emergency guidance rather than investigating the boiler yourself.

If the property or installation is unusual

A straightforward replacement and a project involving changes to the heating system may not have the same scope. The existing arrangement, the proposed boiler location and any associated work can affect which checks and records are relevant. That is why it is useful to raise details about your home during the survey, especially if you know of previous alterations or are unsure what the existing paperwork covers.

Ask for the answer in plain terms: what work is included, who is carrying out the gas work, and what records will follow. If you are not sure whether a document relates to gas safety, the appliance or another requirement, ask for that distinction to be explained. This gives you a more useful record of the job and helps avoid confusion later if the boiler needs attention.

A clearer handover

Checking registration and understanding the paperwork are practical steps you can take as a homeowner. They do not require you to inspect or alter any gas equipment.
